Book Reviews
Guns, Germs, and Steel
A remarkable book! I think every person on the planet, especially the ones in the developed world, should read this book. It would make a huge difference in the way most people view the world. This book finally put to rest a large chunk of those troubles about why some countries are wealthier than others.
Flowers for Algernon
Couldn't contain my tears no matter how hard I tried. The book is too overwhelming. Once you start reading it, I doubt you'll be able to put it down. It's a fast read written as diary entries of Charlie, but is extremely powerful and evokes so many emotions that it's impossible to not break down towards the end. It's a classic for a reason.
Endurance
Just incredible. Simply mind blowing. There is no way I can ever condense what I feel to a review.
A Random Walk Down Wall Street
A wonderful guide for people who want to invest wisely but do not have the time or expertise to proactively monitor their portfolio. Over the long run, a diversified index fund yields almost the same return as the big mutual funds. The writing is filled with humor and sarcasm. Have fun!
Liar's Poker
Incredible! Michael Lewis has a way with words. He does a fantastic job portraying the tumultuous times of 1980s Wall Street as well as educating the layman on some of the most important financial innovations of our times. The funny rhetoric makes the stories a delight to read. Recommended!
Sapiens
An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth
Amazing book! A very 'human' perspective on what life of an astronaut entails. However, it's also about life in general - what defines our life and success is not just the ephemeral highs and the fame but also the long persistent training and continuous work. Pearls of wisdom strewn everywhere along with mischiefs. Highly recommended!
Born a Crime
Such a beautiful book! It's not only a story of his life in South Africa, but also a heart-warming tribute to his fearless mother. The book is funny, sad, beautiful, inspiring - all at the same time - just like the man who had experienced all of it.
Educated
Tara is an exceptional writer. An extremely powerful book that is impossible to put down. The book is not just about Tara's journey, but about making choices - the struggle to choose between her family and her own understanding. She has reinforced the true purpose of education - to discover the world on your own. A must read!
Why We Sleep
Never thought I would love a book on sleep this much! What an incredible teacher and storyteller the author is! Incredible insights into one of the most neglected and the most powerful "medicine" of humanity - sleep. You'll learn how sleep impacts literally every function on your body.
Factfulness
The biggest eye opener I have ever read. If there's one book every person on the planet should read, it is this! It is literally for everybody who has lost faith in mankind or sees the world as reaching a tipping point beyond which there is only doom. This will give you hope and more importantly, 'real' hope backed by data.
Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!
A delightful book packed with tales of this curious man - from safecracking to nude paintings to refusing the Nobel prize. In all of them, he is always curious and honest. I love his quote: The first principle is not to fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool.
India After Gandhi
Finally understood everything that had been bothering me. India is the world's least likely democracy. It's a marvel that it even exists as a country given its diversity. One of the few incredible books that covers everything after independence - something that most Indian schools don't teach!
The Ascent of Money
I Do What I Do
Overall I learnt a lot from this book. The initial chapters are quite difficult to grasp for a beginner, but that proved immensely useful. The speeches get more relaxed as the book progresses. Recommended especially for Indians who are even mildly interested in learning economics.
